I'm doing it
Oooo someone already has some homebrew stuff on this...
I'm actually extremely satisfied with most of the material here that I've found, with some small tweaks I could run a campaign just off of this stuff. I want to add some more stuff to it though. I could literally have a campaign ready to go by like, next week
A lot of these mechanics are fine, but a little too complicated tbh. Also I think making power ups into spells and thereby limiting their use to only spellcasters is a mistake, though I understand why that choice was made. I think power ups should be able to be used by any class.
this is the nerdiest thing I've embarked upon doing all year. I am very excited.
seriously, super fucking excited.
hmmm, should I just go all out and make like, my own mario setting and world, or try to base it rather closely to the Odyssey globe but with tweaks required to fit in all of the places from like, paper mario, super mario sunshine, and so forth
also for the plotline I've gotta come up with something OTHER than bowser kidnapping the princess, right? or do I...
I've been completely lost in mario wikis for less than 48 hours and I already understand why Matpat became the way he is. this is a colossal mess.
you can't just have a body of water named Water Land. you have to choose one, water, or land. this world is absurd
how deep is too deep?
I'm slowly coming to the realization that this rabbit hole may be very, very deep.
oh no, the Animal Crossing world is on the same planet? fuck. shit.
alright so the good news is that other people are also trying to make sense of all this bonkers shit and that apparently includes a royal line of the Toadstool family
also other good news is that I'm not the first person to try to make a cohesive map of the mushroom kingdom and associated continent
look at this CK2 shit
Rosalina is a legitimized bastard daughter of the princess???
oh wait no I'm not sure what Rosalina is, if she's involved in the royal family at all is like, up for debate. she seems to be some kind of quasi goddess? perhaps immortal?
oh wait, oh fuck, Luigi is married to his cousin
I mean like granted it's all in-law stuff and they're not actually related by blood thankfully
his full name is Donkey Kong the Third???
who is Bowser Jr's mother. WHO. ANSWER ME, NINTENDO
DON'T MAKE ME BELIEVE WHAT YOU'VE LED ME TO BELIEVE
Dry Bowser is actually Bowser Koopa's father and his full name is Morton Koopa Sr.
Super Mushrooms (power up mushrooms) are apparently a powerful narcotic and are quite legal throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, and actually provide a good portion of their exports
as a famous hero once said, "here we go!"
ok wait wait, so the Mushroom Kingdom has sovereignty over the Koopa Kingdom, technically making Bowser a rebel vassal against the perhaps unjust reign of an ineffective emperor who sits on the Mushroom Throne? And he is trying to gain leverage for independence by kidnapping his daughter, the imperial princess, Peach?
@starwall based on your expertise i need to know: is mario a pokemon?
@hoppet mario is not a pokemon, no
@starwall thank you, now i can finally rest
@starwall just now?
@seventy I searched "religion in the Mushroom Kingdom" just an hour ago and the implications have been simply world changing
@starwall who is the real Super Mario? Bob Hoskins, of course
@starwall yeah mario canon is a MESS and so are the mainline games' mechanics. like, taking damage makes you more likely to take damage, what kind of feedback loop is that?
@starwall (this is my only complaint about the mainline games, actually, aside from possibly length.)
@starwall not in my book
@starwall they do it different down in sarasaland
@starwall he's got a lot of family expectations on his shoulder
@starwall dry bowser is bowser after having fallen in lava, isn't he?
@sunsetmoth no, Bowser has referred to Dry Bowser as both a family member and close friend, so either he's a beloved cousin or uncle, or the more likely thing I think, Bowser's father
@starwall wait, WHAT?
@starwall this is the opium war all over again.
@starwall so, if you know yet, is there an explanation as to why some koopas (mostly big B) are huge, spikey, and capable of dragonlike abilities, while others are just turts?
@starwall is this in actual mario canon, or that homebrew thing you're looking at
@fool no, this valuable information
@starwall Definitely a musician
@starwall let’s be real we all know it’s peach
@starwall There was a Bowsette comic that explained how Mario was really Bowser Jr.'s father, proven by how Jr. can transform into Mario.
So... Nintendo may not have accepted Bowsette as canon, but afaik, it's the only way we have to legit explain Jr.'s parents.
A cool and chill place for cool and chill people.
