explicit and overt historical racism in the first world war

TIL of the "Secret Information Concerning Black American Troops", a secret First World War memo from the Americans to the French, where the American government, freaked out that the French were being nice to Black soldiers, demanded the French recreate Jim Crow. The French, to their credit, ignored it and burned all copies of it they found; some hero leaked it to W.E.B. DuBois, who published it in its entirely.

@melissasage further; Pershing himself unleashed this torrent of foul racism about his own 369th before he lent them to French Army. Came up in the background to Henry Johnson’s Medal of Honor.

I could swear there were more Americans than Eugene Bullard who flew for France specifically because the USA didn’t want Black pilots, but I can’t easily find anything.

@melissasage I wouldn't go as far as to say the french were being nice to black soldiers, but you can find many period french officer accounts where they mention how awful they find the treatment of black troops by american officers

I didn't know it went as far as this though, thanks for posting about it

@emptyfortress yeah I mean lord knows the French have their own issues but their rank and file did the right thing here in telling the American command to go fuck itself
