Hmmm this is interesting. I wonder if there was some sort of ideological change in the ruling class

WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT: neoliberalism is a racist ideology. From Thatcher to Reagan to Pinochet to Clinton, it's brutality against people of color cannot be overstated. They destroy their unions, throw them in prison, and force them to do slave labor so the white ruling class can have their delicious treaties and Iphones

@SunSaint all graphs of America Per Decade should be required by international law to have reagan's mugshot and a big arrow

@SunSaint a really wild Easter egg in this graph is the tiny juvenile detention line that follows the same trend.

@SunSaint *resists urge to make snarky comment about us politics*

@IceWolf @SunSaint I was also confused so I looked it up:

"Think short-term and long-term. Jails are usually run by local law enforcement and/or local government agencies, and are designed to hold inmates awaiting trial or serving a short sentence. ... Prisons, on the other hand, are typically operated by either a state government or the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)."

@IceWolf @SunSaint Jail is when they put you in a box.

Prison is when they force you to go to a public school wherein the only home to return to is a box on campus of that very school.

@IceWolf @SunSaint my understanding is that jail is for holding people before trial, or at least thats how its supposed to work

@SunSaint this is so infuriating. there was literally 'gangs of new york' type sectarian urban warfare and mob shit happening in the 1920s, but i guess since the main combatants weren't black there was no mass incarceration

@SunSaint It really increased in the 80s (Reagan era). Probably partially resulting from increasing poverty and voter/minority suppression tactics.
