Hey everybody, gather round! Time to talk about how I almost lost my toes in the wilderness

So, I was 19, super duper cocky. I’d been learning survival skills since I was about 10.

I had a huge advantage, I was learning from pros, folks who had years and years of experience, plus old world experience from my grandfather

And I wanted to go camping somewhere spectacular. So I selected a super elevation site, which had recently been scoured clean by a massive avalanche...smart

I scouted the area on a nice warm day. Had the perfect spot picked out. But on the day I went out camping the temperature fell to 33F with heavy wet snow. Bad news.

I brought a friend. By the time we made it to the creek we were semi-soaked with wet snow. Then we both fell in the creek trying to cross

But we kept going

Finally made it to the top of the cliff, soaking wet, but the area I picked to camp was not flat. It was sloped, toward the cliff. But I didn’t care, we made it!

The sun was falling fast, but I didn’t bring a tent, I was going to build a shelter from a tarp

I threw up a few ropes, and made a passable tent from the tarp. But then the wind came. The avalanche had made a funnel, that channeled all the wind straight onto us, the temperature plummeted into the single digits, the windchill that night was -10F.

And my tarp tent collapsed
