The KENTUCKY COFFEETREE is a slender, tall tree, native to the east central US, but uncommon. Like the honey locust, its large leathery seedpods were maybe eaten by now-extinct megafauna like MASTODONS, which pooped out the hard seeds. Those seeds are toxic unless cooked, but the roasted seeds can be made into a hot beverage that tastes...kind of like coffee. Because it grows quickly, tolerates poor soil, and resists deicing salt, it's a nice landscape tree! #plants
