France will still ban Islamic face coverings even after making masks mandatory - CBS News

They just went and proved their face coverings ban is 100% about racism

@ragingstrikes nique la france

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes Yes

yes

and yes

(well, the current French administration, not France, but yes)

Because of the separation of church and state France created that weird notion of secular which is "do whatever you want, but not in front of us"

(which, sidenote, is interesting because Canada for instance, or at least Quebec, has apparently taken the opposite approach of "do whatever, you don't have to hide it")

@FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes *Technically*, any religious symbol in public spaces and, especially working in the public domain (administration and schools, plus students in universities), should not show *any* religious symbol, which includes, for instance, chapelets or even just crosses in necklaces.

Except, as you may very well gather, rule of law is only as good as its enforcers, and with well documented issues of racism within the police...

@FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes All in all, not only is the veil more controversial (so media talk about it, because outrage and all that), but it taps in that back sentiment that has been growing since the Algerian war of the "cultural colonization" of France by "the muslims"; wherein they will show 3rd generation poor French people of Maghreban descent and say "look, they are muslim, they are ruining our culture."

@FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes (whereas, fun fact, they don't talk much about the French influence on those countries, because who cares about colonization :D)

It's also very much taken up by extreme right politicians as the "bad masses stealing our land" and all that funky jazz.

All this knowing in 2019, 3% of French identified as muslims in a survey on religion and secularity (counting 7% who didn't want to say, source: Observatoire des Laïcités)

@FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes (sorry, rant on secularism over ^^")

@furkachi @ragingstrikes well yeah i say it in the same way as i say fuck england. i.e. the institution. i don't mean fuck all english people.

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock @furkachi @ragingstrikes this feels like it could use a #deathtoamerica here, the thread kinda feels naked without one

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@Niquarl @furkachi @FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes

I was going to say that, that's the original meaning of the laicité as meant in the law from 1905, but it has been widely torn into an islamophobic weapon since and has lost its original meaning

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@Niquarl @furkachi @FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes

I'm not sure what you're trying to say but I just wanted to say that being against islamic headscarves is also a thing "left wing" people do, like white feminists

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@Nocta @Niquarl @FuchsiaShock @ragingstrikes you mean la very famous french "left wing"?

yeeeeeeeeeeeeee

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@Niquarl

I never really denied that, but they are considered to be.

It was more of a "being against a systemic oppression doesn't prevent you from supporting another one" message

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock I think nobody ever doubted it.

re: france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock There was no doubt about it.

Back in december/january there was report of police officers asking Asians to remove face masks in sake of the "anti-veil" law.

Also there's a law forbidding covering part of his head in and near manifestations. I wonder how this will be enforced when the manifestations will start again.

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock before people take that seriously, making fun of the old #JeSuisCharlie hashtag after that Naziass paper got what was coming to them...

france, islamophobia, pandemic

@FuchsiaShock Ugh. I’ve been wondering about that same sort of bullshit here in the US where I live. Nothing would shock me from the people we have in charge right now.
