covid, NHS, lgbt rights, flags

Now if I see the Baker rainbow flag, I no longer know any more if that actually means someone supports LGBT rights, or if it's meant as a gesture of support to the NHS.
If I see the version with the black and brown and trans elements added, I probably do know that *is* someone supporting my rights.
Why couldn't they make their own flag? And it's not just that it's a rainbow, it's a particular rainbow with six colours in it. i.e. these literally are pride flags having their meaning changed to mean NHS support.

And with LGBTQ people suffering from increased isolation and some of us even being forced back into the closet due to being stuck with unsupportive family, while the 'equalities' minister looks to be moving to revert progress on LGBTQ rights - We need reassurance, and one of our biggest signs of reassurance has been taken away.

We don't get pride this year, AND THEN our pride flag gets nicked. Fuck cishets, man.

@thamesynne right? especially at a time lgbt rights are coming under attack by this government.

@thamesynne @FuchsiaShock

once the channers notice it will be done intentionally anyway

it's a good time to push for adoption of the new flag (the second one you posted), it's better anyway imo

@thamesynne @FuchsiaShock

wait, I just remembered, wasn't the rainbow flag widely used as a symbol of peace during protests against the Iraq war? or was it a french-only thing?

@emptyfortress @thamesynne I think it's been used that way, but it wasn't the six colour Baker pride flag? I could be wrong.

@dgold @FuchsiaShock @thamesynne

thanks! I did a quick image search but didn't notice the differing number of stripes

@thamesynne @FuchsiaShock I was thinking the same thing, to tell you the truth. Here in the states, fundamentalists have been trying to "reclaim" the rainbow for years.

@FuchsiaShock Also for what it's worth I feel like appropriating the gay pride flag to represent the healthcare system, which historically has used its power to stigmatize and pathologise queer identities, and in england to chemically castrate gay men, and to the present continues to restrict and gatekeep access to HRT, literal life-saving treatment for trans folk, feels calculated and vile.

@ActNebbish Though equally, I get the impression LGBT people are a bigger percentage within NHS staff than within the population at large.

@FuchsiaShock that flag looks like a more colorful south african flag lol
