"We can be friends despite politics" should mean "we disagree on the necessity of states but we agree on the abolishment of Capitalism", not "we disagree on whether gays should have rights but we agree that the poor should starve". Political issues are supposed to be about how to govern and organize, and basic human rights were never meant to be political issues - they're moral issues.
